UNDER EYE DARK CIRCLES - CAUSES AND TREATMENT OPTIONS

Causes

Dark circles are often caused due to sleeplessness or disturbed sleep. If you find yourself developing dark circles, you need to first catch up on your sleep. Genetics too could predispose you to developing dark circles.

Other factors causing dark under-eye circles include:

Drinking an excess of beverages that contain caffeine.

Smoking

Allergies -dermatitis aound the eyes

Thyroid problems

Acanthosis nigricans-insulin resistance-obesity

A lack of iron in your body during menstruation. This often contributes to dark circles, which is why some women have a tendency to develop dark circles during their period.

How to treat dark circles

There are treatments and methods that will definitely minimise the darkness and bring out the brightness in your eyes. The treatment will depend on the factor causing the circles.

First of all, try and figure out the reason you have developed dark circles. Have you always had them Are they a recent occurrence Does your mother have dark circles under the eyes as well Once you can pinpoint the cause for dark circles, it would be much easier for you to get rid of them.

1. Are you allergic to something If yes, work on avoiding the allergens.

2. Apply Vitamin E to the area under your eye.

You could open up a Vitamin E capsule, and apply a little oil. Swallow the rest of the oil. This not only helps you get rid of dark circles, but also reduces puffiness around the eyes. In addition, regular application of Vitamin E delays the onset of wrinkles.

3. Apply creams that contain Vitamin C.

5. Skin care and under-eye creams

Look for OTC skin creams that contain Vitamin C or K, elastin, collagen, AHAs and kinetin. Prescription creams such as dilute glycolic acid,Kojic acid,arbutin,nicotinic acid,mild low potency cortisone creams are helpful. A good under-eye cream reduces dark circles as it:

Prevents further moisture loss by absorbing moisture from the air.

Provides oil to the under-eye skin as it lacks sebaceous glands.

6. Stimulates blood circulation.

In resistant cases chemical peels, lasers and or intense pulsed light can be tried. The latest Yellow Peel—a mixture of alpha and beta acids—gives very good results for resistant under-eye pigmentation. Microdermabrasion used with collagen eye pads is also an excellent treatment. Dermalift, a new skin tightening treatment, has shown results.

7. Laser and minimal surgery

For visible blood vessels, fat grafting or permanent fillers work well. Carbon dioxide and erbium laser resurfacing also gives good results.

With Indian skin tones the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation after a laser treatment is high.

8. Home Rx

Frozen, used tea bags Place them on the eyes to fight darkness and puffiness when tired.

Cucumber juice or grated cucumber It is soothing and has mild bleaching properties. Apply it on your circles daily. For better results you can also mix some tomato juice.

Yogurt and honey Mix a teaspoon each of plain yogurt and honey. Apply it like a mask under the eyes. Wash off after 15 minutes. It’s very effective.

Potatoes Grate a potato, squeeze the juice out and refrigerate the pulp. Later, put it in a piece of muslin, place it on your eyes and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes. Ensure that the juice does not go into your eyes. Potatoes contain catecholase—an enzyme that is used as a skin lightener in cosmetics.

8. Eye care

Dip wads of cotton in a chilled mixture of cucumber and potato juice. Keep this on your eyelids for 15 to 20 minutes and gently wash it off. Apply a little baby oil.

For long eyelashes.., apply a thin coat of castor oil every night. It strengthens lashes and cools your eyes.
Massage a few drops of coconut oil around the eyes to get rid off dark circles.
To reduce puffiness of your eyes, grate a potato; tie in a cloth and place the cloth over your eyes for about 15 minutes.

Add a small pinch of salt in water and wash for bright and sparkling eyes.
Mix tomato juice and lemon juice in equal quantity and apply around the eyes. After 30 minutes wash it off with cold and hot water alternatively.

Make a paste of sandal wood and nutmeg. Apply the paste around the eyes before sleeping and wash it off in the morning.
Crush a cucumber and take the juice. Add a little rose water and apply around the eyes and wash it after 30 minutes.
Place cotton wool swabs dipped in cold milk on closed eyes for removing dark circles.
